Is There a Fortune in Your Spare Change?

In November a popular content creator on TikTok posted a video of him finding a rare Jefferson nickel. A similar nickel sold for $3,100 a month prior to that. However, that nickel had a much higher grade--the coin he found would likely sell for closer to $75. Same coin, different grade. Two important conclusions from this story. First, there are coins in regular circulation that are very valuable. Second, the coin quality grade is critical--the difference could be worth thousands!

Tips to Find Valuable Coins

If you don't have any coins, you can buy coin rolls from banks which can also be a useful resource. The great thing about that is, if you don’t find any valuable coins, you haven’t lost any money! With all the valuable coins floating around, Conrad wanted to share some tips for finding valuable coins in circulation.

Look for old coins

Many valuable old coins will be difficult if not impossible to find, but you can still find wheat pennies, silver coins, and others. Looking at the year of the coin is a great place to start. You can even sort them by year and give them a closer look later on.

Get Familiar with silver coin eras

The United States mint made quarters that were 90% silver from 1932-1964 to honor the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birthday. During WWII, the government needed nickel for the war effort, so congress had the US Mint make nickels using silver from 1942-1945. Half dollars from 1964-1970 contain less silver, but worth keeping - same with some Roosevelt dimes and other coins. You can Google a comprehensive list of silver coins.

Look for Error and double die coins

Many coins have known double die marks. These are coins that were struck twice in the die during the striking process. Despite the imperfection, these coins make it into circulation and become collectible because they are rare. Again, there are many coins you can research, but double die pennies alone can be found in 1943, 1955, 1972, 1983, 1984, and 1995.

You need to be determined and thorough, the circulation isn’t as rich as it was in the past. While some classic coins may be rare in circulation today, collectors may still find some as well as modern error coins, such as off-center strikes. The most valuable coins in circulation are typically those with errors. When you find some valuable coins and you’re ready to sell them for cash, give Conrad Morris a call and schedule a home visit.
