There are many coins you can get from the bank or as change at the grocery store that are worth far more than their face value. Let's take a look at some of the valuable coins you can find and how to identify them.

Valuable Coins to Look For

1962 US Quarter Dollar

Silver Quarters 1932-1964

The United States mint made quarters that were 90% silver to honor the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birthday. Prior to this period, the "Standing Liberty quarters" were made starting in 1916. Each Washington quarter contains 0.1984 ounces of pure silver, valued at $4 - $60 depending on condition and mint.

No Mint Dime 1982

1982 No Mint Mark Dime

The Philadelphia Mint started adding "P" mint marks to dimes starting in 1980. The P was accidentally left off of tens of thousands of dimes in 1982, making these a rare collectible. These dimes were reportedly found in high numbers in the Ohio area and rumored to be given out as change at the Cedar Point Amusement Park. The value depends on the strike and condition with a range of $30 - $250.

Silver War Nickels 1942-1945

1942 Silver Nickel

During WWII, the government needed nickel for the war effort, so congress had the US Mint make nickels using silver. Silver War Nickels contain .05626 ounces of silver. These coins usually have a large mint mark on the back, above the dome of Monticello. These coins range in price from $10 to thousands of dollars, depending on the year and mint. There are some that show double die marks that can be especially valuable.

Double Die Pennies

Double Die Pennies

Many coins have known double die marks. These are coins that were struck twice in the die during the striking process. Despite the malfunction, these coins make it into circulation and become collectible because they are rare. Double die pennies can be found in 1943, 1955, 1972, 1983, 1984, and 1995. These range in price from $10 - $500 in general. However, some pennies have several areas that are double struck and can be worth tens of thousands of dollars!
